I'm not entirely sure, but I think it has something to do with the way the Microsoft Access 97 (which is what the client program is written in) works with the connections to the SQL database... once the connection is broken, you have to restart the application to re-establish the connection.  Several years back I had asked our programmers about that very thing, and I believe that was the answer that they gave me.

Is your server in the same location and on the same network as your workstations?
